The southern dialects almost exactly correspond to the southern song dynastie's borders, with exception of taiwan, which was recently settled from the 1600's with hakka and minnan settlers from fujian, and sichuan, whose population was wiped out by a plague and mongol invasions around the 12th, 13th century, and was repopulated by northern immigrants. Mandarin has been significantly influenced by the Manchu Jurchens and mongols, and they were the first signifigant number han chinese to emigrate into Yunnan, the earlier han dynasty settlers had died out or were absorbed into Nanzhao.
